Playgroups – Early Intervention Service Deaf/Hard of Hearing

Playgroup is an integral part of the Department for Education, Early Intervention Service Deaf/ Hard of Hearing (EISD/HH).
Playgroups are provided for families who are engaged with this service.

EISD/HH Playgroup offers safe and stimulating environments such as the Botanic Gardens, Cirkidz and the Urrbrae Farm for you to have fun, play and experience things together with your child and other families from the service.

Playgroup provides an opportunity for families who have a child with a hearing loss to meet other families with a child or children who have a hearing loss.

This is the best support for families according to numerous research papers (Joint Committee on Infant Hearing, 2007; Spencer and Marschark: Evidence Based Practice in Educating Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students 2010; ECC-DHH Directions for the IFSP, August 2010; Moeller, Carr, Seaver, Stredler-Brown and Holizinger: Best practice in family-centred early intervention for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, 2013).

It is also a safe environment for your child to see other children with hearing aids or cochlear implants or BAHAs just like them!
The EISD/HH playgroups provide opportunities for consolidating or learning new vocabulary, exploring new concepts, language and questioning skills.
Every playgroup has an Auslan (Australian Sign Language) interpreter for families who use sign language.

Comments from our Easter Playgroup further highlight why we as a service, really value providing these opportunities for parents/caregivers.

“We love getting to know other families at SERU playgroup.  My daughter also had so much fun playing with all our support workers and exploring the Botanic Gardens”.

“Really enjoyed the day,  it was nice to meet other parents.  It was also good to talk to another parent about the Klemzig Bilingual Preschool“.
